Week 13 Internet Safety Reflection

1. For this assignment I read two talks, the first one was from President Holland titled " Let our voices be heard" and the other one was from President Bednar titled " Things as they really are".
2. Then, I watched the video Ciberbulling Feathers in the wind and the video made the comparison of gossip with feathers once you have spread rumors about some one then you can not repair the damage just like if the wing blows the feathers everywhere.
I also watch "broken Friendship" which talks about a girl named Katie who gave her password to her best friend and then her friend gave it to some girls at school. The girls were popular and they decided to give the Katie's password to some seniors who started sending e-mails to Katie. The seniors send e-mails with her picture on it and suggesting to do improper things and signed her signature since they got her password.
This really made Katie feel bad, because every where she went the students would make fun of her, and she did not want to be there.
I also watched Julie's journey and this video is about a girl who liked to go to chat rooms and meet people, one day she talk to this guy supposedly around her age and he would always make her feel good by telling her she was smart or beautiful. Then she built a relationship with him, he would always controlled her and then one day she decided to run away with him, she left for three weeks until they were found in Reno and he was arrested he was 56 years old and she was only a teen. Now she wishes she never run away with him.
3. From these videos and reading I learned that we have a big challenge when we are using the internet, we need to be careful who do we talk to, and we should not give our personal information to people we don't know especially because there are predators out there to take advantage of young people.
Also another important thing I learned is that technology is good but can also harm us if we don't take the right precautions. We need to make sure we don't spend enormous amounts of time on the internet and end up avoiding regular social life because it can be addicting.
4. This gave me the opportunity to talk to my children about the safety issues in the internet. I was surprised that they already knew some things like nt giving information out to strangers, and avoiding chat rooms just because they don't know who they are talking to.
They had already watched something similar before they used the internet at school, which is good the teacher had told the students about safety issues. Then, they reaction was not that surprising because they knew what I was talking about, yet they were surprised when I talked about how real things may look in the games. I told them that we need to make sure we make the right choices when we go to the internet and that includes talking to a grown up when something bad appears.
I think that my children will be more careful now when they go to the internet and not give personal information.

Technology in the classroom

My cooperating teacher did not use that much technology in the classroom, even though the school had some technology available. She did have a personal computer were she checked her e-mails and scheduled lessons though. The only instrument that was used all the time was the overhead during her lessons. I had the opportunity to introduce power point in my lesson about math but it was tricky to have good classroom management during the lesson. I was teaching addition of tens and I showed the long ones being added to give us a solution. The students had computer class so they had a chance to practice their computer skills playing a variety of seasonal games.
Also on another occasion I had the opportunity to use a projector and allow the kids to write their own solutions using it. I noticed the children really enjoyed that activity.
I think that she should take advantage of the technology available in the school and allow the students to become familiar with it.

Week 11

It was amazing to see the students work on so many projects using technology. In the "Book Ends of War" video I saw students working on a pearl harbor project. I noticed how they were investigating the names of the soldiers that were recorded in the monument at Pearl Harbor. I think is a great way to help students learn history and alsothey learn to be comfortable using the technology in the classroom because they will use it in everyday life, either at school to do projects or later on when they have jobs.
In the second video "Inside Kapunahala" I saw how neat it is to allow the students to work on projects that will teach them real life experiences such as becoming a reporter or work on the different scripts, not just learning about those careers but actually doing those jobs.
I think is a great opportunity for the students to learn more about technology and their world around them. When the teacher provides those opportunities, it helps the students become excited about learning, which is not easy to accomplish.

Week 10: Technology with young children

These videos were very interesting since they made me realize technology is not hard to implement it in the classroom. It's amazing how the students were able to send their videos to other students in a different place without leaving the classroom. I have always been afraid of using this technology in the classroom because of the time it takes to prepare and the equipment, but if it is available that will be a great way to teach children. If kindergarteners are able to use computers, then I think it won't be that bad trying to incorporate it into our curriculum.

Week 9: Technology in the clasroom

I have the opportunity to go to Columbia Elementary and the technology that is available in the classroom is not that impressive. I know the teacher has a laptop which has software such as Power Point and Microsoft, also there is an overhead available for the teachers use. There is a TV with DVD player in the room and a cd player that the teacher uses for music. However the students do have access to a computer lab where they get a chance to learn about computers only once a week.
I did complete the inform consent form and the course evaluation.

Week Seven: Science project

Our group decided to do 2nd grade Science. Standard 3:
Students will develop an understanding of their environment.
Objective 2 Observe and describe the weather
a.Observe and describe patterns of change in weather.
Content
The teacher will do a mini lesson on the seasons. To support her teaching she will use kidspiration technology.
The pedagogy
The pedagogy is observing and describing patterns of change in the weather. Students will see different patterns of weather like rain, snow etc.
Technology
In order to do that the teacher will use kidspiration to engage the students into learning about the specific patterns that exist between seasons. For example, to show winter time I will use the symbols for snow and place trees that have no leaves.
Using kidspiration is a good match because it allows the teacher to show the students what the characteristics of a season looks like by using the pictures. Also there is a chart that shows that there are four seasons in a year. This technology allows the teacher to teach the students without going outside the classroom.
Presentation
I know that some students are visual learners so this will be a great thing to incorporate in our teaching and I think is a good way to present this information in an interesting manner.

Wetlands

Making this virtual tour was very helpful, I did not know that Google provided so much great technology. We can use this great technology in our classrooms especially since we can not take the students physically to those places of interest.

Week 5: Virtual tour

For my virtual tour I decided to do 4th grade Science Standard 5 and the objective is that students will understand and recognize the characteristics of wetlands in Utah. Students will have the opportunity to compare two lakes sizes by using the measuring stick.
Another activity they will be able to do is to find characteristics present in wetlands and compare them to deserts.

Week 4: Implementing technology in the classroom

Technology is an amazing thing when used in the classroom properly, we can incorporate it when we are trying to teach interesting subjects like history, literature or anything but I am afraid not all schools will have enough equipment to accommodate everyone in the classroom. I think using technology to teach is another great way of keeping the students attention especially to those that are visually learners.

Digital Storytelling- Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout by Shel Silverstein

Digital Storytelling

Our group decided to use a poem by Shel Silverstein because we it relates to children and also it talks about a little girl who doesn't want to take the garbage out. We used color clay to make the characters instead of pictures and this is a great example of using technology in our teaching.

TPACK is the combination of three different parts namely pedagogical knowledge, technology knowledge and content knowledge. We use the technology to be able to teach students certain content in the classroom.

Week 2

This week was very difficult for me because of the stuff I had to learned in my Ipt class. I felt very ignorant in computer technology so I decided to meet with Ms. Burgoyne and she was very helpful. I learned how to make a poster and how to do my calendar. I am so thankful for that.

technology

My experience with technology is not great. I just know how to use e-mail and cell phones. I am learning a lot thanks to this class.
